The Cat Adoption Centre Program
The Cat
Adoption Centre program was launched in Sydney in October
1999 with the aim to re-house kittins and cats that would otherwise
face an uncertain future.
There are now 150 centres nation wide with plans to further extend
the program into provincial and regional areas.
The Cat Adoption Centres have proved a great success with many
facilities significantly boosting their average adoption
rates - in some cases by almost 300 per cent.
Selected clinics are provided with kittens and cats for adoption,
which are supplied by local welfare agencies, pounds or by existing
means. Clinics are also provided with signage and purpose built
'kitty condominium' to display felines in their waiting room.
On adoption, new owners receive an adoption certificate and kit,
containing a sample of food, a feeding bowl, a collar and information
on how to care for kittens and cats, courtesy of the programs sponsor
WHISKAS®.
To promote responsible cat ownership and in accordance with state
codes of practice, kittens and cats supplied by the welfare agencies
are usually desexed, microchipped, vaccinated, wormed and flea
free prior to adoption.
The adoption fee ranges from $100 - $150, depending on the State
and number of veterinary procedures undertaken.
Kittens and cats from the welfare agencies
travel with a "kitty
pawsport' or official agency paperwork. The pawsportlpaperwork
identifies any distinguishing features, details past history (if
known) and provides an up to date medical record.
To date over 17 000 kittens and cats have been re-homed.
